A friend of ours had a rental house with a pond that had been neglected . It had a pump, liner, the whole works. He was offering it free - with the catch that everything goes. Rocks, gargoyle, fish and everything.
We pulled the pond over the span of two days.
It was a shocking amount of rock.

First we called for locates. Given the proximity of the house, it was important to know we wouldn't be digging up a utility line.
Once that was complete, we took the liner and laid it out.
A can of spray paint provided the marking of the out line of the pond, and the digging commenced.

We decided to hide the 55 gallon barrel filter behind the large bush against the house.
Tiers were created to both secure the liner, and the rocks that would hold it in place. We decided to integrate the flat flagstone that had served as a ring around the previous pond, inside the pond this time.
Special care was taken to level each flat stone on each side, while providing enough slant to encourage the water to go down and not back.
It was especially important that the waterfall and pond body be designed to overflow into the yard, should it ever happen, and not under the structure, because of it's close proximity. Fortunately, in a previous career, Dave done surveying, and angles and flow are his thing.

Serendipitously, the next door neighbor was digging up his flower beds to put in a shop. He offered all of the plants for free, so long as he didn't have to do the removal. Lucky!
UPDATE 2022-
In the beginning there was one male and one female goldfish, and a male koi. They have been busy. There are at least 100 fish in the pond this year, of all different sizes. From our reading, she can produce offspring with both male fish, but the koi/goldfish offspring will be sterile. Kind of like donkeys and horses making mules.
