Project completed June 2023
If this project looks familiar its because its an extension of the shop project. (The Shop project)
In early 2022, we began finishing interior ceiling of the shop, now lovingly called The Carriage House. We pulled down the west fence, planed the fenceboards, used the 1 x 1 slatted wood (same as the glass house privacy screen) as cleats on the inside of the 2x12 rafters. Then we insulated, sealed the wood, cut it to length and used it as the ceiling material. I wanted the weathering to show through so I went easy on the planer depth.
The carriage house doors were insulated and fitted with the recovered cedar fence board as well. We had already decided the accent color in this unit would be a pale green, so we made sure to allow some of the green to show through when we planed the wood, and then used a heavy wood sealer to make the color pop.
We liked the ceiling so much we decided to do a rough wainscotting around the room. The chair rail at the top of the wainscotting is beautiful straight grain cedar that used to be windows on Shep's riverfront home. They were installed in 1960, and replaced in 2019. We used the glass for the glass roof on the greenhouse project, and used the wood framing as chair rail, window framing, door jamb, and crown moulding. It should be noted, old straight grain wood smells better than our newer produced wood, richer somehow.
Above the kitchen and bathroom, we used a white nickel gap style shiplap. After clear coating the fence boards it seemed a bit darker than I expected, so the white helped brighten it up, with a less rustic (and more washable finish). I also liked that it maintained the same line at 5 1/2 inches width with an 1/4 inch cover. We were sure to use primer and a several coats of nice washable semigloss paint.
