The One About Chickens
When it was made clear in 2020 that there would be no travel, it was decided we would get chicks at Birch Ave, as a food source (eggs) and for joy. Chickens are fun to watch.
Six eggs from PPC (project people cameo) Morgan's hens were incubated and hatched. They were small birds of Cochen and Silkie mix.
And then, as they do, the babies grew in to toddlers...
...and then into teenagers. Many of them sported a poofy hair do, and several of them have seven toes on each foot.
Others were less fortunate in the looks department. This one we called 'Fugly'.
He was a Cochen/Silkie mix. Though he was very small, he developed early and began to crow at 4 months.
The City has regulations against roosters, so Fugly was the first to be 're-homed'.

It was a little harder to let this fella go when he finally found his crow. He was so beautiful!
When it was down to three little black hens, we built the glass henhouse. Shortly thereafter, we took on a few free red sexlink hens. The Cochen/Silkie black hens were so different than the reds, there was aggression issues and the red hens moved on to Krista's fathers coop.
In April, Whitney decided she was broody. There was no rooster, and she was less than a year old, but after five weeks of stubbornly sitting on an empty nest, Krista brought home three eggs from her fathers fertile coop.
The rooster is a big beautiful multicolored fella, and the eggs are Leghorn, Red sexlink, and Aracana.
Though the broody chicken is none of those, she didnt mind being and adoptive mother, and sat on these three eggs quite happily.

On 05/23/ peeps were heard coming from the leghorn(white) egg, and the Aracana (green egg).
Now that the eggs are due, Aretha decided she too is broody, and has squeezed into the nest with Whitney. Both of them have stopped laying eggs as a result.
